You eat reasonably well. You've got plenty of vegetables on your plate, you snack on nuts and seeds, and you choose whole grains where you can. It’s natural to assume you’re getting enough magnesium, right? We tick the boxes, buy the right things, and figure our bodies have what they need to thrive.

The uncomfortable truth is that you almost certainly aren't getting enough. But it isn't because of a lack of effort on your part. The nutritional value of our food has shifted fundamentally over the last few decades, and if there’s one thing we wish more people knew, it’s this.

It starts with the soil

A century ago, the average daily diet provided around 500mg of magnesium. Today, most people get somewhere between 175 and 225mg. That’s less than half of what our great-grandparents were getting from the same kinds of foods.

So, what happened to the dirt?

Modern industrial farming relies on synthetic fertilisers (usually a mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) to grow crops quickly. These make plants look bright and healthy, but they don't replenish the full spectrum of minerals the ground needs. Potassium is a particular problem because it’s a bit of a bully. It competes for the same entryway into a plant’s roots as magnesium. When the soil is flooded with potassium, the magnesium gets pushed to side.

We also have to look at how we treat the land. Healthy soil is supposed to be a living ecosystem full of bacteria and earthworms that break minerals down so plants can actually absorb them. Modern pesticides and herbicides like glyphosate have progressively stripped that life away. Glyphosate actually binds to the magnesium left in the dirt, locking it up so the plant can't absorb it. It’s a double blow: the magnesium is being depleted, and what’s left is being chemically blocked.

What about organic produce?

It’s a fair question. If the problem is synthetic farming, does buying organic solve it?

Partially, but not entirely.

Organic farming avoids synthetic fertilisers and most pesticides, which helps preserve soil health over time. But soil depletion is a slow process that took generations to develop, and it'll take generations to reverse.

Even organic crops grown in depleted soil can't synthesise magnesium that isn't there. A plant can only work with what the ground provides. This isn’t an argument against organic food (there are plenty of great reasons to choose it), but it’s an honest acknowledgement that even the most carefully sourced diet is working with a compromised starting point.

The modern diet trap

On top of the soil issues, there’s another layer to the problem. Our modern diets rely heavily on the very foods that have been stripped bare of their nutrients.

Even when a plant manages to absorb some magnesium from the dirt, it still has to survive the trip through a factory. We’ve become a culture of convenience, and that convenience comes with a hidden cost.

Take wheat, for example. In its whole form, it’s a decent source of minerals. But when it’s milled into the refined white flour found in most of our bread, pasta, and crackers, up to 80% of the nutrients are simply lost. It’s like buying a new car and finding out the engine was removed before it left the lot. It looks the part, but it isn't going to get you very far.

Because so much of what we eat today is processed and refined, we’re effectively filling up on empty calories. We feel full, but our cells are still starving for the minerals they need to function. Our society is eating more than ever, yet we’re the most deficient we’ve ever been.

The foods that still deliver

Some foods do still contain magnesium, and they're worth keeping in your pantry.

  • Kelp: This is at the top of the list. It draws minerals directly from seawater rather than soil, which is why it remains one of the most concentrated sources available.
  • Raw cacao: The unprocessed form of chocolate is another magnesium powerhouse. If you find yourself craving dark chocolate, it’s often just your body’s way of trying to encourage you to top up your levels.
  • Almonds and cashews: These are genuinely a good source and easy to work into your day.
  • Wheat bran and blackstrap molasses: These are old-school staples that still pack a punch.

The catch is the quantity. To get close to the 400mg daily intake recommended for adults from food alone, you’d need to be eating significant amounts of these foods every single day, consistently, without much variation. And that just isn't realistic.

This isn't about eating better...

It’s worth being clear about what this means (and what it doesn't).

This isn’t an argument that you need to overhaul your diet or start eating perfectly. The point is actually the opposite: even people who eat well, make considered choices, and prioritise whole foods are still unlikely to get enough magnesium from their diet alone. The system that's supposed to deliver it to us has changed too fundamentally for food to compensate on its own.

A century ago, supplementing magnesium would've been unnecessary for most people. Today, the gap between what our food provides and what our bodies need is wide enough that for the vast majority of us, some form of supplementation simply makes sense. It isn't a workaround for a poor diet. It’s a practical response to a problem that exists well above our individual food choices.
