Flipping the Bottle: What Makes a Good Magnesium Spray

When you grab a bottle of magnesium spray and turn it over, the ingredients usually just say 'magnesium chloride' and water ('purified', if you're lucky).

But what you might not realise is that magnesium chloride is a pretty broad term. It tells you almost nothing about where the ingredient actually came from or how it was processed. And that matters. The journey from the ground to the bottle completely changes how well the spray absorbs into your body.

Australia is home to some of the most pristine, ancient salt lakes (vast, flat expanses where water has been slowly evaporating for thousands of years). As the water evaporates, salt crystallises and forms a thick, dense layer across the surface of the lake. And just beneath that salt crust, sitting protected from the elements, is a highly concentrated magnesium brine.

What makes it even more special is we didn't just pick this source out of a supplier catalogue. Our founder, Lee, actually came across it years ago. He had headed out to the salt lakes needing some quiet time away from everything, and ended up finding the exact raw, natural brine we still use today.

The extraction is a costly and strictly regulated process; no stone gets turned over or tree touched without careful consideration of the impact on the surrounding environment. And that’s why you don't see many brands doing it.

How is that different to most sprays?

The majority of magnesium sprays on the market are actually manufactured from magnesium sourced from the Tibetan Plateau or the Dead Sea. The liquid is collected, heavily heated and dried into slabs, before its broken down into flakes, and then dissolved back into water.

Think of it like the difference between freshly brewed coffee and instant. The instant version does the job, but the process strips out the complexity and richness of the original. With magnesium flakes, that heavy heating and processing strips away the naturally occurring trace minerals that come with a raw brine. And those are the exact minerals your body actually recognises and wants.

There's also a concentration difference. A natural brine can hold a significantly higher concentration of magnesium in solution than a reconstituted flake product can. And because the amount of magnesium your skin absorbs is directly related to the concentration of what you apply, that gap matters.

Why a spray rather than a pill?

When you swallow magnesium tablets, it goes on a bit of a journey. Down to your stomach, through your intestines, it's processed by your liver, and then distributed throughout your entire body via your bloodstream. It works (most of the time), but it can be slow. 

You might be waiting hours or even days to feel a difference. Plus, if you're someone whose stomach doesn't handle supplements well, you’ll probably end up spending some time in the bathroom. Let's just say nobody's chasing wellness with a side of diarrhoea.

The naturally occurring magnesium brine we mentioned earlier, and purified water, which is only added to bring the concentration to a consistent level. That's it. We don’t add anything else.
